How I met and chose Islam as my faith and lifestyle.

Photobucket

********************************************

Asalamo aleikum brothers and friends, five years ago when I decided to accept Islam as my faith and lifestyle, I never thought that adopting a different religion from that of most of my countrymen (Christians) and use the hijab could change many things.

After 9 / 11 influenced by the barrage of information regarding Western "Muslim terrorists", I decided to investigate for myself the "other side of the story."

I confess that I had "terror" to Muslims and something that bothered me most was to observe the submission of allegedly suffered by women, to observe a veil made me angry because he could not stand the idea that they were not "free ", how wrong I was!

After three years of sharing with Muslims around the world to chat, I know his style of life and faith, I marveled at the respect and fear they have for Allah.

Agreed this disappointment that I caused the Catholic Church when I saw the corruption, aiding and encouraging the worst instincts of their "religious" but forbid their followers.

As we reflect and realize he could no longer to belong more to a creed which embarrassed me even enter one of their temples, I thought about what could practice because I like to congregate. I could not imagine any of the other religions practiced here and I thought: Why not Islam?

A friend from Egypt helped me find it, I had never seen a woman with a hijab in my country, much less a mosque. They gave me the address and before entering I knew that this was my way from now on, I felt so proud! For the first time in my life I knew I was part of "something."

The sheikh advised me think a lot of my decision with my family ... Nothing, I had no doubt right there made my shahada and asked him instructions on the ghusl and the salat.

I started wearing the hijab the next day, no one beat me, nobody asked me. However, my colleagues and friends were shocked. Most of my relatives are ashamed of me, others know me as such.

I had to "fight" in the Civil Registry in the photograph of my identity card and passport accept me wearing the hijab, even if this means that every time I have left the country, to me is the only one left in the transport , while sending the dogs to detect explosives ...

But by wearing the hijab is that many people realize that there are Muslims in my country and are interested in learning more about our faith, because to me and ask what we believe or why we cover.

A few months after I left the job I had and I could see how fear and ignorance is most people about Islam. How can I forget the gentleman who asked me "What part of Musulmani are you?", Or those passing say, so hot, and came the clowns, here comes the crazy! What do you believe, the Virgin Mary? Or, as my kids tell some friends: How can he be Muslim if his mother is "super Costa Rican!

Costa Rica is known for being extremely peaceful, and I'm proud of it, but like everything else, some obscure those beautiful feelings and to believe the rest of the population who all think alike.

Last year when I was against the FTA with the USA, I was harassed and threatened with death, I got emails asking me where I did not remove her hijab so that I easily recognized that "San Jose" the capital of my country was safe for me or my baby could be "sold well" in the Colombian market ...

On the other hand, suffer from discrimination by the school where my son 15 years studying and immigration authorities, without a valid reason, returned on 03 October last year my husband to his country of origin ( Argentina), alleging that did not carry the "paper enough" when he returned to visit her young son, being separated for four months, and lost courage, money and health when in charge of migration from Juan Santamaria Airport told me (looking me up down, of course I wore my hijab): nothing that you or your spouse do will allow him to enter the country, at least today ...

I pleaded, begged and pleaded with you to understand that if at that time we did not have enough money, how we would do if he returned and losing the ticket in 1000 that he had used? Acted in an inhumane manner, looked at me with contempt, disgust and annoyance.

Meanwhile, in the entrance hall to the airport, employees made fun of my husband saying, There is your wife like crazy screaming to be let in. ...

Faced with this situation any longer, they rebuked them play with the lives of people and then sentenced him and I said: "With much less reason now entering the country because her husband has just disrespectful to be spoiled ...

It took about an hour to leave the airport, missing my strength, I do not know how much time crying on the stairs until the police came and asked me out of their facilities ...

When I passed out, woke up in hospital with blood pressure at the edge of a stroke. I spent many days crying because at the time the attacks on my son grew to the point that even expelled him evidence in their favor that they had planned plots against him were invalid.

But I could not stay home on its hands and weeping. It was then that these injustices decided to make a hunger strike (which the press gave testimony http://www.prensalibre.co.cr/2007/octubre/10/sucesos03.php)
to peacefully protest the inhumane treatment and the mockery of which we were subject, especially my son and me are Costa Rican citizens.

In total, I made three strikes, the first seven days in front of the Supreme Court, the second three days in front of Presidential Palace and the last four days at the premises of Migration.

What experiences God, during the fourteen days in all I stayed without eating food, I was approached by people from different faiths to keep me company, to pray for me, I took some blankets, coats, umbrellas (it was outdoors in the rainiest time of year.) There was even a friend who came to massage me in the legs because "I was numb."

The threats by the government people were very hidden, for example, sent to officials of the National Board for Children (PANI) to intimidate me with that "we will remove your children if you continue here." Came some of the most famous lawyers in the country to offer free help (on camera) but when I looked after "not available" or responded to my messages ...

The damage to my health did not wait and had to end the protests (my body can not take it anymore) but I finished with the satisfaction of that reporting these situations, it would set a precedent for not re-do the same any other, to share or not my religion.

The whole world is accustomed to when a Muslim commits an error, the story goes around the world which traces of gunpowder in seconds, but when it is on the contrary, goes unnoticed.

Some people in the forums where I posted my decision to undertake the hunger strike, was accused of "suicidal" and advised me not to take a chance by a man who may ultimately not worth it.

The same man was the same as a year ago I had given back the dignity, confidence, love and respect that I had stolen a thankless long time ... Strange but true but even after four months and only through Argentine Muslims and some individuals Costa Ricans, who could raise the money for my husband to come back since for any public or private organization were "sufficiently important."

For example, the Embassy of Argentina argued that the problem had created Costa Rica and they did not have "much money" to help with airfare and Migration to the evidence presented from the contradictions that were at the consulate of Costa Rica Argentina to seek input and output requirements of the country, I responded in a letter, following me out of their facilities to police: Migration can not regulate money to your problem.

The Supreme Court rejected all appeals for protection it brought to my husband and my son and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights dismissed the case because my husband "could go to Costa Rica after all."

However, dear brothers and friends, while it is true that at times has been taken away from me all the material, someone or something could never take my faith and my love for Allah and Islam. Some have even had the nerve to recommend that maybe things would be different if "return to God."

Alhamdulillah, brothers and friends, today, I have my family together again, my child has been welcomed in their new school for its outstanding performance and conduct, have been awarded a new job that I can use my hijab alhamdulillah.

And although Costa Rica's Muslim population is under 500, converts and I do not get to 15 and there is only one mosque that remains closed most of the time, people gradually get used to seeing someone with hijab, to share, to understand that we are no different (in my work asked me if "my condition" required some special treatment or benefit, the only thing I asked for was permission and a suitable place for my prayers) and to accept ourselves as we are, realizing that more things that unite us than divide us. And although Costa Rica's Muslim population is under 500, converts and I do not reach fifteen and there is only one mosque that remains closed most of the time

Everything was worth it brothers and friends, gives me a Muslim identity, happiness, faith and certainty that I chose the right path, something I never had before.

Now I have new projects in my life, I hope the opportunity to work in an institution or works by spreading Islamic social welfare nonprofit that is what Allah wants, I abandon myself to God to use me as His instrument what he wants, whenever and wherever. I am available and willing to travel anywhere in the world with my daughter to fulfill Allah's will that put on me.Amín

Hola Rashida Jenny Torres,

Mil gracias sinceramente,
